Background:
Julian Higgins is a Senior Statistician at the MRC Biostatistics Unit. He joined the MRC in January 2000 from Imperial College School of Medicine. Before that he worked and at the Institute of Child Health (UCL) since obtaining his PhD from The University of Reading. From January 2003 to March 2007, Julian was also Senior Epidemiologist at the Public Health Genetics Unit (now the PHG Foundation), where he established the UK HuGENet Coordinating Centre. The HuGENet Coordinating Centre became part of the MRC Biostatistics Unit in April 2007.

Julian is a member of the HuGENet Executive Committee and was the first President of the Society for Research Synthesis Methodology in 2005-6. He contributes extensively to The Cochrane Collaboration: he is a Co-Convenor of the Cochrane Statistical Methods Group, an Editor of the Cochrane Developmental, Psychosocial and Learning Problems Group and an Honorary Visiting Fellow of the UK Cochrane Centre in Oxford. Julian is Co-Editor of the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions (with Sally Green, Melbourne) and of the HuGE Review Handbook (with Julian Little, Ottawa).

Current Research Interests:
Julian's research interests are in meta-analysis and evidence synthesis, clinical trials, Bayesian methods and systematic reviews methodology, with particular applications in genetics, dental health, mental health and heart disease. His statistical methodology research includes Bayesian meta-analysis, quantifying and investigating between-study variability, meta-analysis of individual participant data, sequential methods for meta-analysis and complex evidence synthesis.
